See Chain & the Gang on Sunday at Mercury Lounge

October 2nd, 2009

Washington D.C.’s rock and roll Renaissance man, Ian Svenonius, is on the loose again, kicking out soul-inspired prison blues with his new band, Chain & the Gang. Their first record, Down with Liberty…Up with Chains!, was released this past April on K Records. In recent years, Svenonius—the former frontman of the Make-Up, the Nation of Ulysses, Scene Creamers and Weird War—hosted the Internet chat show Soft Focus and published a multifarious collection of essays, The Psychic Soviet. When this man speaks—and sings—you want to listen. See the band, above, playing “I See Progress” at AS220 in Providence, R.I., and then go see them—along with NYC bands Silk Flowers, Julianna Barwick and Screens—on Sunday at Mercury Lounge. —Lauren Reynolds
