Villagers Descend on the Big City

November 2nd, 2010

For some, a breakup can lead to endless wallowing. But Conor O’Brien didn’t spend much time wondering what went wrong following the breakup of his band the Immediate. In fact, while nursing a hangover the very next day, the singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist wrote the first song for his next band, Villagers. Six more tunes followed before the Dubliner teamed up with other musicians to play the songs live. An EP came next before the full-length Becoming a Jackal arrived earlier this year. The album contains dark lyrics alongside atmospheric music and was nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize. See for yourself when Villagers (above, doing “Becoming a Jackal” on Later…with Jools Holland) play Mercury Lounge tomorrow.
