Go See Apex Manor

March 24th, 2011

From the ashes of the Broken West emerged the phoenix of Apex Manor: When singer-guitarist Ross Flournoy’s former pop band broke up, he fled L.A. for suburbia in Pasadena hoping to do some writing. Spurred on by an NPR Record a Song in a Single Weekend competition, he ultimately came up with “Under the Gun.” Once Flournoy wrote more songs with Adam Vine and then added some bandmates, including former Broken West bassist Brian Whelan, Apex Manor (above, doing “Under the Gun”) was born. According to Rolling Stone, their first LP, January’s The Year of Magical Drinking, is filled with “sunny melodies with dark lyrics.” Find out for yourself when they play Mercury Lounge on Saturday night.
