The Fleshtones Play the Late Show at Mercury Lounge Tomorrow

July 15th, 2011

Keith Streng and Marek Pakulsi were roommates in the ’70s when they discovered that someone who’d lived in their place prior to them had left behind some instruments in the basement. So Pakulski picked up the bass and Streng strapped on the guitar and then they joined up with a couple of buddies, Lenny Calderon, on drums, and Peter Zaremba, on vocals, harmonica and keys. Shortly thereafter, the Fleshtones, playing uncomplicated garage rock, were born. They performed at the now legendary CBGB and Max’s Kansas City before becoming one of the first bands to ever play Irving Plaza, Maxwell’s and the original 9:30 Club. Eventually Ken Fox took over bass duties from Pakulski and Bill Milhizer replaced Calderon. Over the years, the Fleshtones (above, doing “Shiney Heinie”) have put out a host of LPs, EPs and singles, and, alongside Lenny Kaye, play the late show at Mercury Lounge tomorrow night. This band is still getting after it, and so should you!
