A Double Dose of Island Music at The Bowery Ballroom Tonight

June 29th, 2012

Born in Bermuda, Mishka Frith grew up at sea, sailing from island to island in the Caribbean on his family’s boat. So it should come as no surprise that he took an interest in music with some West Indies flavor. His first album, a self-titled affair, deftly mixed reggae with pop, soul and reverb-soaked rock. Mishka (above, playing “Talk About” for parkcity.tv) has steadily built on that with the subsequent release of three more discs, the last two on Matthew McConaughey’s J.K. Livin Records.

Of course, with each new album comes another tour, and Mishka is currently out on the road with Rylee Anuheake’alaokalokelani Jenkins—Anuhea for short. She comes from a musical family. And influenced by the likes of Bob Marley, India.Arie and Jack Johnson, the smooth-voiced singer-songwriter (below, doing “Simple Love Song”), born and raised on Maui, delicately balances acoustic soul, reggae, pop and R&B. See her with Mishka tonight at The Bowery Ballroom.
