Take a Little Trip with Monster Magnet

December 13th, 2012

Frontman Dave Wyndorf had already been in several bands by the time he formed Monster Magnet, straight out of Red Bank, N.J., in 1989. The group’s sound, a mash-up of punk, metal and spacey-feedback psychedelia, was labeled retro and stoner rock—the latter probably because the band’s first two demos were called I’m Stoned, What Ya Gonna Do About It? and Forget About Life, I’m High on Dope. But on the strength of hit single “Space Lord,” Monster Magnet (above, playing “Zodiac Lung”) broke through commercially with their fourth release, 1998’s Powertrip. They’ve remained busy ever since, touring and putting out four more albums, including Mastermind in 2010, but tomorrow night at Music Hall of Williamsburg, the band takes a look back, playing their debut album, Spine of God (which has been labeled “the metal album for people who hate metal albums”), in its entirety.
