Kick Off the Weekend with Weekend at The Bowery Ballroom

January 9th, 2014

Post-punk shoegaze trio Weekend—Shaun Durkan (vocals and bass), Kevin Johnson (guitar) and Abe Pedroza (drums)—released their debut full-length, Sports (stream it below) in 2010 to considerable acclaim. Pitchfork said, “the record is everything that a lot of modern indie rock is frequently failing to be in 2010: loud, immediate and engaging, with a strong melodic sense of songwriting to tie it all together.” After the album came out, Weekend (above, performing “Celebration, FL” for BreakThruRadioTV) toured considerably, crisscrossing the U.S., Europe and even Japan. They spent a fair amount of 2012 working on their next LP, but the guys in the band also found time to move to Brooklyn from the Bay Area. Jinx (stream it below), also filled with abrasive and melodic sounds, and also earning rave reviews, arrived last summer. And according to Allmusic: “You’d have to look hard to find another band making dark and noisy pop as sonically engaging and emotionally satisfying as Weekend do on Jinx.” Fortunately, you won’t have to look far this weekend because Weekend play The Bowery Ballroom on Friday.
