The Soil & the Sun Bring Orchestral Rock to Mercury LoungeApril 8th, 2014
Playing what they call “experimental spiritual orchestral rock,” the Soil & the Sun make a lot of noise—the good kind. What began as a duo, with Alex McGrath (vocals and guitar) and Ben Jackson (drums), in Grand Rapids, Mich., in 2008, has blossomed into something much bigger, a kaleidoscopic seven-piece band, with Joanna Perry (violin), William Campbell (guitar), Jacqueline Warren (keys and vocals), Mike Golden (multi-instrumentalist) and McGrath’s wife, Ashley McGrath (vocals and keys) adding to the complex harmonies, layered melodies and driving rhythms. Watch them, above, performing “I Know It (I Feel It, Too)” for AudiotreeTV, and then go see the Soil & the Sun play the early show tomorrow night at Mercury Lounge. Arrive early to catch the opener, singer-songwriter Johnny Miller.
