The New Mendicants Play Mercury Lounge Tonight

May 1st, 2014

Norman Blake, Joe Pernice and Mike Belitsky are each from different countries and different bands—Pernice, an American (Pernice Brothers and Scud Mountain Boys), Blake, a Scot (Teenage Fanclub) and Belitsky, a Canadian (the Sadies). But they banded together to work on the soundtrack of a film adaptation of a Nick Hornby book. Their music didn’t make it into the movie, but nevertheless, the New Mendicants were born. After releasing the understated, melodic Australia 2013 EP (stream it below) last year, the trio followed it with a full-length, Into the Lime (stream it below), earlier this year. According to PopMatters: “Approachable yet sly, clever but heartbreaking, Into the Lime is another great set from players who seem to have their lion’s share of those already.” The New Mendicants (above, performing “Follow You Down”) are now out on the road in support of their new tunes, and you can see them play the early show tonight at Mercury Lounge.
