Christopher Owens Brings New Music to Mercury Lounge on SundayJune 18th, 2015
Make no mistake, Christopher Owens has led an interesting life. He spent much of his childhood traveling, as a member of Children of God, before finding his way to Amarillo, Texas, as a 16-year-old and then later making a home in San Francisco. It was there that he paired up with JR White to form Girls and make reverb-drenched ethereal pop music. But Owens eventually announced he was leaving the band to do his own thing, making a lighter, more personal kind of music, which turned out to be his acclaimed solo debut, Lysandre (stream it below), out in 2013. Without too much notice, Owens (above, doing “My Troubled Heart” for WFUV FM) put out his third full-length, Chrissybaby Forever (stream it below) just a few weeks ago. According to PopMatters, “Chrissybaby is arguably the most Girls-ish thing Owens has released since that band evaporated in 2012. It’s also the kind of record that most fans seem to want from Owens: jangly, heart-on-your-sleeve pop missives about being in love and fucking up and just trying your best.” Close out the weekend with Christopher Owens at Mercury Lounge on Sunday night. Jersey shoegaze trio Overlake and NYC three-piece EZTV open the show.
