Manic Focus and Buku Team Up at The Bowery Ballroom on Friday

March 3rd, 2016

John McCarten was born in St. Paul, Minn., but the producer, beat-maker, genre-dabbler and rising star in the EDM scene, has made a name for himself in Chicago—and across the country—as Manic Focus. And while he makes music that gets people dancing, thanks to bits of soul and blues alongside heavy-hitting bass, he’s made a sound that’s entirely his own. Chicagoist calls his most recent album, 2014’s Cerebral Eclipse (stream it below), “his best example yet of blending bass-music rhythms, tight hip-hop beats and noodle-y live instrumentation.”

Manic Focus (above, doing “Sowing My Zone”) is currently winding down a tour with Buku, which brings them both to The Bowery Ballroom on Friday. Thanks to the release of several EPs, Robert Balotsky—doing business as Buku—has won over fans with his smooth mix of emotive melodies and low-end beats. And like Manic Focus, Buku (below, doing “Laugh Track”) has also become a rising star in the EDM scene. Catch both of them before they’re too big to play a small room on Friday night at The Bowery Ballroom.
