Gwenno Brings Acclaimed Electronic Music to Rough Trade NYC

May 17th, 2016

You may have first heard of Gwenno Saunders as Gwenno Pipette, a vocalist and keyboardist for the English pop group the Pipettes. But the Welsh singer (and dancer) dropped her last name when she went solo as an electronic musician with a couple of EPs and then a proper full-length, last year’s Y Dydd Olaf (stream it below)—translation: The Last Day—a political concept album sung in Cornish and Welsh. Pitchfork called it “a record about the importance of preserving cultural identity in order to resist corporate death, and on it she establishes herself as a visionary of synth-pop moods and textures.” Currently on a short swing through the East Coast, Gwenno (above, performing “Chwyldro” live for Alt M.V.) plays Rough Trade NYC tomorrow night. And as an added bonus, Kingston, N.Y., dream-pop duo Shana Falana open the show.
