Celebrate Texas Independence Day on Saturday at Terminal 5

March 4th, 2015

This week marks the 179th anniversary of Texas Independence Day—and this Saturday at Terminal 5 is the seventh anniversary of us celebrating it in style. Inspired by Lonestar musical royalty like Waylon Jennings, Robert Earl Keen and Willie Nelson, singer-songwriter Pat Green has been making Texas country music since 1995, while he was still in college. And he’s been fairly prolific ever since graduating, releasing nine studio albums and a pair of live LPs, in addition to becoming known as an energetic live performer, all of which has made him very popular in his home state. Green’s most recent album, Songs We Wish We’d Written II (stream it below), highlighted by covers of “Even the Losers” and “Soulshine,” came out in 2012, but he’s currently working his way up and down the East Coast. And you can see Green (above, performing “Wave on Wave” for Texas Music Scene) on Saturday at Terminal 5, alongside the like-minded Josh Abbott BandCasey Donahew Band and Hudson Moore. And as an added bonus, any patron at least 21 years old with a Texas-related tattoo or wearing an article of clothing with a logo from a Texas college on it will receive one complimentary drink.

A Double Bill of Texas Country on the Lower East Side Tomorrow

September 8th, 2014

While in school at Texas Tech University, Josh Abbott teamed up with some fraternity brothers to form the Texas-country group the Josh Abbott Band (above, performing “Hangin’ Around” for the Bing Lounge). Now based in Austin, Texas, the band consists of Abbott (vocals and guitar), Austin Davis (banjo), James Hertless (bass), Caleb Keeter (guitar and harmonica), Eddie Villanueva (drums) and Preston Wait (fiddle). They’ve put out three well-received albums, including 2012’s Small Town Family Dream (stream it below), and they’re currently out on the road with another like-minded Texas-country outfit, the Casey Donahew Band (below, doing “One Flag” live for the Texas Music Scene TV), also a six-piece, but with, perhaps, a bit of an edgier outlaw image. Donahew’s gang has released five crowd-pleasing albums, the most recent of which, Standoff (stream it below), came out last year. And both bands bring a taste of authentic Texas country to the Lower East Side when they play The Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night.

Kick Off Your Weekend with a Texas Tailgate at Terminal 5

February 27th, 2014

Sometimes when something is so exciting, you can’t help but want to get the party started early with a good old-fashioned tailgate. And along those lines—and ahead of Saturday’s Sixth annual salute to Texas Independence Day at Terminal 5 with Randy Rogers band, Josh Abbott Band, Wade Bowen and Stoney LarueTerminal 5 hosts a Texas Tailgate tomorrow night. And with a high-energy lineup of good-times acts like the Casey Donahew Band (above, doing “Nowhere Fast” for Texas Music Scene), Reckless Kelly and Kevin Fowler, this could just as easily be the main event. But instead it happens to be the first of two great nights of music. So join in on the party and get a taste of Texas.

February 27th, 2013

This Saturday marks the 177th anniversary of Texas Independence Day—and the fifth anniversary of celebrating it at Terminal 5. Again, the talented Texas-country-music artist Pat Green (stream his most recent album, Songs We Wish We’d Written II, highlighted by covers of “Even the Losers” and “Soulshine,” below) headlines the festive lineup, along with the like-minded Randy Rogers Band, Casey Donahew Band and Stoney LaRue. And as if you’d need another reason to join the fun, any patron (21 or older) wearing an article of clothing with a logo from a Texas college on it will receiver one complimentary drink. The show starts early and ends late, so make sure you head to Terminal 5 on Saturday night to party Texas style—177 has never looked so good!
