High on Fire and Kvelertak Will Rock You Tomorrow at Webster Hall

November 14th, 2013

When singer-guitarist Matt Pike’s doom-metal band Sleep broke up, the often-shirtless Pike wasn’t going to just sit by idly. Instead, he formed the even-faster-paced stoner-metal group High on Fire (above, doing “Madness of an Architect”)with drummer Des Kensel and bass player George Rice, who’s since been replaced by Jeff Matz. The power trio, “less a band than a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness,” has steadily released new music—six LPs, including last year’s acclaimed De Vermis Mysteriis (stream it below)—and hit the road, touring the country. And their current tour finds them crisscrossing the country with Kvelertak.

Erlend Hjelvik (vocals), Kjetil Gjermundrød (drums) Vidar Landa (guitar and piano), Marvin Nygaard (bass), Maciek Ofstad (guitar and vocals) and Bjarte Lund Rolland (guitar) have been expertly mixing punk and black metal since forming in Stavanger, Norway, in 2007. Earlier this year, Kvelertak (above, performing “Bruane Brenn”) released their second LP, Meir (stream it below) to favorable reviews. And you can see both bands, plus the Boston heavy metal quartet Doomriders, tomorrow night at Webster Hall.
