Vocalist Sara Lucas (who’s earned comparisons to Joni Mitchell) was raised in St. Louis, influenced by that city’s rich tradition of blues, jazz and gospel. At the same time, guitarist Ryan Seaton grew up in Little Rock, Ark., taking in as many underground punk shows as he could. The two met in New Orleans less than a decade ago and began making music together as Callers. Eventually the duo decamped for Providence, R.I., before settling in Brooklyn. Several months ago, Callers (above, performing “Howard 2 Hands”) released their third album, Reviver (stream it below), on Partisan Records. Paste Magazine says it’s “an album of growth for Callers. It shows their talents as a band that can perform a vast array of songs and yet still manage to tie them all together.” And even better, you can see them at Mercury Lounge on Monday night.
