A Double Dose of Iron & Wine

October 11th, 2011

Remember on MTV Cribs when people would show their bedroom and say, “This is where the magic happens”? Well singer-songwriter Samuel Beam actually did create magic in his very own bedroom. In fact the songs he recorded there caught the attention of Sub Pop Records and ultimately led to the auspicious The Creek Drank the Cradle, the very first Iron & Wine release, in 2002. Since then, he’s gone on to release a raft of new music, EPs, LPs, compilations and live stuff. And although these recordings are much more high fidelity than his original offerings, Beam’s hallmark remains his deft lyrics and soft voice. Iron & Wine (above, doing “Lovesong of the Buzzard” at this year’s Austin City Limits) released a new disc, the well-received Kiss Each Other Clean, last winter. And you can see the band at Terminal 5 tomorrow with Low and on Thursday with the Low Anthem.

Ladytron Plays Terminal 5 on Saturday Night

October 7th, 2011

Sometimes you want synthpop, but other times you want shoegaze rock. It’s a conundrum, but it doesn’t have to be because have we got a Venn diagram for you. That’s right, the electro quartet Ladytron—Helen Marnie (lead vocals, synthesizers), Mira Aroyo (vocals, synthesizers), Daniel Hunt (synthesizers, electric guitar and vocals) and Reuben Wu (synthesizers)—has been expertly combining the two genres since forming in Liverpool in the late ’90s. And since then, the band has released five albums, including Gravity the Seducer, which came out just a few weeks ago. With a new album, comes a new tour, and you can see Ladytron (above, doing “He Took Her to a Movie”) tomorrow night at Terminal 5.

Ben Harper – Terminal 5 – October 1, 2011

From the moment he came onstage, Ben Harper connected with the crowd, saluting with hands clasped as if in prayer and thrust upward toward the balconies. This gratitude was infectious and lasted the entire night, as he thanked those gathered time and again, and sang the praises of New York City in between songs, transforming a roomful of fans into lasting converts to the potential glory of Terminal 5. The set ran the gamut, drawing on material from across his catalog, while also offering a wealth of covers. Pretty much every moment was a highlight. Soul was in the house, with the opener, “I Heard It Through the Grapevine.” Rock was in the house, as a fiery “Glory & Consequence” delved into a verse from Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy” before coming back for its conclusion. Gospel was in the house, as a rapt crowd watched Harper step up to the front of the stage in front of the monitors to belt out an a cappella verse during a stirring rendition of “Where Could I Go.”

The crowd sang along to some of the softer songs, like “Suzie Blue” and “Another Lonely Day,” and watched with awe as drummer Jordan Richardson delivered a 10-minute drum solo. The band welcomed opener Grace Woodroofe to the stage for a cover of Neil Young’s “Helpless.” Her guitarist, along with Charlie Sexton, the guitarist from Bob Dylan’s band, remained onstage to add layers to the Led Zeppelin classic “No Quarter.” The crowd was still insatiable. “Every song I sing is ‘Sexual Healing,’’’ joked Harper after one shouted request. All the while he lavishly praised New York City and its inhabitants. “The world is nothing without a city like this,” he said early in the set. “You’re all world travelers—look at you! Every block is a page. Every borough is a chapter.”

Later Harper related a string of events he’d been a part of in New York City over the years, saying “I’ve had one indelible memory in this city pretty much every year of my life.” He listed off some of the artists he’d had the pleasure of playing with here over the years, starting back in 1994: Gil Scot-Heron, P.J. Harvey, the Fugees, Phillip Glass, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. There was the show at the Apollo with the Blind Boys of Alabama, playing to a rain-soaked crowd in Central Park in 2007, performing for Barack Obama in 2008 at the Hammerstein Ballroom. “Which brings me to tonight, Terminal 5,” he concluded. “Thank you, New York City. Thank you!” —JC McIlwaine

Matt Nathanson Plays Terminal 5

September 29th, 2011

Matt Nathanson doesn’t like to be pigeonholed to just one thing. Sure, he sings and writes songs, but he also plays the guitar—sometimes acoustic, sometimes electric. He always performs solo, that is when he isn’t doing so with a full band. And when he isn’t playing music, he’s doing comedy. Nevertheless, Nathanson has been recording music since he was in college. In fact, his first album, Please, came out when he was just 20. And in the almost 20 years since then, Nathanson’s music has been featured on a variety of TV shows and he’s released a host of live discs, EPs and LPs. The most recent, Modern Love, came out in June. Nathanson recently appeared on Conan, playing “Faster,” above, and you can see him along with Vanessa Carlton (who’s got a new album of her own, Rabbits on the Run) tomorrow night at Terminal 5.

Lotus Returns to Terminal 5 Tomorrow Night

September 23rd, 2011

In 1999, four college friends—Jesse (bass) and Luke (guitar and keys) Miller, Steve Clemens (percussion) and Mike Rempel (guitar)—united forces to mine their rock, funk and jazz influences, thereby becoming an effective jam band in the process. But two years later, when Lotus added drummer Chuck Morris to the mix, they moved in a different direction. They were still guided by the same musical interests, but they began playing instrumental electronica. Or as Jesse Miller said: “I truly believe Lotus’s sound comes from the roots of rock and roll mixed with electronic beats that are popular today. It took a long time for us to finally find a sound we all agreed on. But believe me, we experimented plenty before deciding what sound we were looking for.” Over the years the band has made some changes, including Mike Greenfield replacing Morris and Clemens, but their eclectic sound, as proved on the just released Lotus, and high-energy shows are still not to be missed, which you can see for yourself when Lotus (above, performing at the Wonder Ballroom in Portland, Ore.) plays Terminal 5 tomorrow night.
