Try to Win Tickets to Themselves/Buck 65 on Sunday

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

The Northern California musical duo Themselves—rapper Adam Drucker (Doseone) and producer Jel (Jeff Logan)—got started in the late ’90s, bringing heady lyrics to underground hip-hop. They’ve since put out three full-length albums, the most recent of which, CrownsDown, came out last year, following a six-year hiatus.

Richard Terfry, straight out of Nova Scotia, Canada, is a radio host, turntablist and MC who performs under the name Buck 65. He’s got a deep background in hip-hop but touches it up with blues, country, folk and rock influences. And he’s prolific, having released a slew of albums, EPs and singles since 1995.

Why is this important? Because Themselves (above, performing “Gold Teeth Will Roll”) and Buck 65 (below, doing “Dang”), along with Jel and Odd Nosdam and Stabbing Eastwood (featuring Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio), play The Bowery Ballroom on Sunday. Want to go? Then hit up Eddie@BoweryPresents.com, telling him why you deserve a free Sunday night out. He’ll get in touch if you win.

Win Tickets to See Kaki King Tomorrow Night

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Katherine Elizabeth King, who performs under the name Kaki King, learned to play the guitar at a young age, but she basically abandoned it after discovering the drums, which she played in high school bands. But while at NYU, King rediscovered the guitar, occasionally playing shows and sometimes even busking on subway platforms. She cut a demo in 2002, which gained her some attention, and released her debut, Everybody Loves You, the following year. But things really took off in 2007: King appeared on albums by Foo Fighters and Tegan and Sara, plus she contributed music to Sean Penn’s Into the Wild and appeared in the flick August Rush. Her most recent album, Junior, came out yesterday, and to celebrate Kaki King (above, performing “Playing with Pink Noise” on Late Show with David Letterman) is playing Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow and The Bowery Ballroom on Friday. And The House List is giving away tickets to tomorrow’s Music Hall show. Want to go? Just fill out the form below, including your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Kaki King, 4/15) and a brief message explaining why you deserve to go. The winner will be notified tomorrow. Good luck.

Want to go but don’t have tickets? No worries. The House List is giving away two of them. Win Tickets to See the Big Pink at Webster Hall Next Tuesday

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

The British electro-rock duo the Big Pink, which has nothing to do with the Band, got its start when multi-instrumentalists Milo Cordell and Robbie Furze began mixing sounds—nuance and noise—in a home studio. Once they realized they were on to something, they enlisted the help of others to play their music live, which they will do next Tuesday at Webster Hall. The Big Pink (above, playing “Velvet” on French TV) has released four singles and its first album, A Brief History of Love, came out last September.

Want to see this show? The House List is giving away two tickets. Just fill out the form below, including your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (the Big Pink, 3/30) and a brief message explaining why the Big East has faired so poorly in the NCAA tournament this year. The winner will be notified on Tuesday. Good luck.

Win Tickets to See Shearwater at The Bowery Ballroom on Saturday

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Close to a decade ago, singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalists Jonathan Meiburg and Will Sheff were in the talented Austin, Texas, band Okkervil River. Seeking an outlet for some of the quieter songs they’d written, the two founded Shearwater. That group’s first disc, The Dissolving Room, came out in 2001. Over the years, Meiburg’s now-ex-wife, bassist Kim Burke, and drummer-vibraphonist Thor Harris joined the band, and they’ve gone on to tour and release several more albums—the most recent of which, The Golden Archipelago, came out last month. Shearwater (above, playing “Leviathan, Bound”) comes to The Bowery Ballroom on Saturday, and The House List is giving away two tickets. Want to go? Then fill out the form below, including your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Shearwater, 3/27) and a brief message explaining why you deserve to go. Win Tickets to Balkan Beat Box

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Ori Kaplan, formerly in Gogol Bordello, and Tamir Muskat, of Firewater, were born in Israel and met in Brooklyn. They were united by a love of music, and playing together—as Balkan Beat Box—they blend Balkan, klezmer and Mediterranean sounds with dub, electronica and hip-hop. The duo, joined by a rotating group of musicians, has put out a couple of albums since 2005. The third, Blue Eyed Black Boy, will be released next month. But you won’t need to wait that long to check out their new music because Balkan Beat Box (above, playing “Hermetico”) is playing Webster Hall on Saturday. Want to go? The House List is giving away two tickets. Just fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Balkan Beat Box, 3/13) and a brief message explaining what you like so much about the band. Win Tickets to See Mayer Hawthorne & the County at Webster Hall

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Some people use the method to figure out their porn name, but Andrew Mayer Cohen, who grew up on Hawthorne Road, added his middle name to that of the street he grew up on to become the soul singer Mayer Hawthorne. He’s most influenced by Curtis Mayfield, Smokey Robinson and the legendary Holland-Dozier-Holland writing team, but Hawthorne is much more than a singer and writer. In fact, he’s also a producer, arranger, audio engineer and a DJ, plus he plays a variety of instruments and has even been known to rap. His soul music began sort of as a goof, but the tunes were no joke and they eventually led him to Stones Throw Records. And now Mayer Hawthorne—above, playing “Maybe So, Maybe No” for Suite903.com—starts a new tour at Webster Hall on Thursday. Want to go? Fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Mayer Hawthorne, 3/4) and the name of your favorite soul song. The winner will be notified on Thursday.

Win Tickets to Tomorrow Night’s Editors Show

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

The post-punk UK band Editors—singer-guitarist Tom Smith, guitarist Chris Urbanowicz, bassist Russell Leetch and drummer Ed Lay—released their first album, The Back Room, in 2005. The buzz from that earned them appearances at Coachella and Lollapalooza the following year. The band’s second disc, An End Has a Start, released in 2007, went platinum in the UK the very day it was released. Not wanting to rest on their laurels, the guys in Editors (above, playing “Papillon” on Later…with Jools Holland) opted to take their sound in a different direction in choosing to use synthesizers on 2009’s In This Light and on This Evening rather than sticking with the dark guitar rock they’d employed on their previous two albums. But you can judge which style you like best when Editors (with the Antlers and the Dig) play Terminal 5 tomorrow night.

Want to go but don’t have tickets? Then try to win two from The House List. Just fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re to win tickets to (Editors, 2/19) and a brief message explaining which Winter Olympic sport is your favorite and why. Eddie Bruiser, who does not care for figure skating, will notify the winner tomorrow. Good luck.

A Double Shot of New Orleans Music This Saturday

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Art Neville was the keyboardist and a singer for the Meters, one of the most influential bands in American-music history—and quite possibly the greatest funk band of all time. Later on, his youngest brother, Cyril, joined the group as a percussionist and vocalist. Something must’ve clicked because when the Meters broke up in the late ’70s, Art and Cyril, along with their other brothers, Charles (sax) and Aaron (singer), formed the Neville Brothers. With their delicate harmonies and predilection for funk, they became one of the top purveyors of the NOLA sound.

Mac Rebennack was born in New Orleans in 1940. His musical career, as a guitarist, took off in the late ’50s. But following an accident, he had to drop the guitar, so he focused on playing the bass and then, with Professor Longhair as an important influence, turned to the piano. Several years later, in the early ’60s, Mac Rebennack moved from LA to L.A. and somewhere along the way, with time and the help of his winning combination of blues, jazz, pop, boogie-woogie and Zydeco, the singer-songwriter was reborn as Dr. John. His live shows, known for R&B, psychedelic rock and a little a bit of voodoo hoodoo, earned him a cult following—and the attention of Eric Clapton and Mick Jagger. Ultimately, though, he’ll probably always be known for the albums Gris-Gris, Dr. John’s Gumbo, In the Right Place and Desitively Bonnaroo (a name music-festival fans might recognize).

And the best news of all is that both the Neville Brothers and Dr. John (above, playing “Iko Iko”) are playing The Wellmont Theatre tomorrow night, and The House List is giving away two tickets. Want to go? Then fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Nevilles/Dr. John, 2/13) and a brief message telling us what you love about New Orleans music. The winner will be notified later today.

See Those Darlins Tomorrow Night at The Bowery Ballroom

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Those Darlins write songs that effectively mix country, pop, punk and rock. The trio—Kelley Darlin (bass), Jessi Darlin (guitar) and Nikki Darlin (baritone ukulele)—hails from Murfreesboro, Tenn., but they record their music here in NYC. So in a way, their show tomorrow night at The Bowery Ballroom (with the So So Glos and Pine Hill Haints opening) is a sort of homecoming. While it’s true that Those Darlins (above, playing “Wild One”) are a band comprised entirely of ladies, they’d rather be known for their rowdy performances (“There are fucking tons of dude bands out there and they’re not described as an all-male band,” says Nikki), which have charmed audiences across the country and have garnered them a fair amount of positive press. Find out for yourself why in person tomorrow night.

The House List is giving away two tickets to tomorrow’s show. Want to go? Then just fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Those Darlins, 2/5) and a brief message telling us what you’d be doing if you weren’t at this show. The winner will be notified on Friday.

A Funky Friday at Terminal 5

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Sure, it’s taken the Saints more than 40 years to reach the Super Bowl, but you won’t need to wait anywhere near that long to get your own NOLA fix. Because where funk and jazz collide, you’ll find Galactic. And that collision will be at Terminal 5 this Friday. Virtuoso drummer Stanton Moore holds together this longtime instrumental group. But percussionist and vocalist Cyril Neville, of the Neville Brothers, and trombonist Corey Henry, of Rebirth Brass Band, will join Galactic onstage. (Henry also sat in on Galactic’s new album, Ya-Ka-May, out next Tuesday.) Plus, as an added bonus, the jammy Tea Leaf Green will be opening. So get there early—expect to hear at least one Zeppelin cover—and get your weekend started right.

We know you’ll have so much fun seeing Galactic (above, playing “Hustle Up” with Boots Riley) that The House List is giving away two tickets to the show. Want to win them? Then just fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Galactic, 2/5) and a brief message telling us why you could use a free night of the funk. The winner will be notified on Friday.

Try to Win Tickets to See Fanfarlo

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

Their reputation preceded them. Fanfarlo has earned comparisons to Arcade Fire and Broken Social scene, probably because they employ overlooked instruments in the indie-rock world, like the mandolin, trumpet and violin, and because of their swelling anthems. Simon Balthazar (vocals), Leon Beckenham (trumpet), Justin Finch (bass), Cathy Lucas (violin), Amos Memon (drums) and Mark West (guitar) came together as Fanfarlo mid-decade in London. And through a series of singles, the Internet and their frenetic live shows, word of mouth got out. So people knew to see the band before they’d even heard the band. Since their debut full-length album, Reservoir, came out this year, it’s even easier to hear the band. And now you can see them because Fanfarlo (above, playing “The Walls Are Coming Down”) plays Webster Hall on Friday.

They’re definitely worth checking out. And to prove it, The House List is giving away two tickets. Fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Fanfarlo, 12/18) and a brief message explaining why you deserve to cut loose for free on Friday night. The winner will be notified by noon on Friday. Good luck.

Win Tickets to See Jeff the Brotherhood on 12/7

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Performing as Jeff the Brotherhood, brothers Jake (vocals and guitar) and Jamin (drums) Orrall began playing shows in Nashville in 2006. Their lo-fi “psychedelic-grunge” sound found them playing basements, bars, galleries and pretty much any other place that would have them. But pretty soon, that we’ll-play-anywhere work ethic and their take-no-prisoners attitude won the Orrall boys a loyal following. They’ve since released a full-length album, Heavy Days, on their family-run record label, Infinity Cat.

Jeff the Brotherhood, above, playing “Heavy Days,” opens for Ted Leo and the Pharmacists at The Bowery Ballroom on Sunday, which is sold out. But have no fear ’cause they also play Mercury Lounge on Monday, and it just so happens that The House List is giving away a free pair of tickets. Want to go? Just fill out the form below, listing your name, e-mail address, which show you’re trying to win tickets to (Jeff the Brotherhood, 12/7) and a brief message telling us why you deserve a free Monday night out on us. The winner will be notified by noon on Monday.
