Do Yourself a Favor and Check Out Richard Buckner

December 1st, 2010

Richard Buckner was born in California, spent some of his formative years in Edmonton, Alta., and did time in San Francisco and Lubbock, Texas, before finding his way to Kings County as a Brooklyn resident. With a lineage like that, it should come as no surprise that the singer-songwriter’s music doesn’t fit neatly into any one categorization. While his songs often have what could be considered traditional country themes, Buckner’s lyrics go deeper, drifting toward alternative-rock territory, with traces of folk and pop to boot. His debut album, Bloomed, put him on the map in 1994, and he’s steadily released music since, up through his most recent effort, Meadow, which came out in 2006. Richard Buckner (above, doing “… & the Clouds Could’ve Lied” in studio for KDHX FM in St. Louis) isn’t touring behind a new disc, but he does play Mercury Lounge on Friday. Check him out.
