Spend Friday Night with Jessica Lea Mayfield

March 30th, 2011

She may be young, at just 21, but Jessica Lea Mayfield has already been making music for a long time. At the ripe old age of eight, the precocious Mayfield began performing with her family’s bluegrass band, One Way Rider. Eventually she began writing her own songs and playing gigs in Ohio with her older brother. Not stopping there, Mayfield recorded her first EP, White Lies, at 15. Somehow Dan Auerbach ended up with one of the 100 copies, and not only did Mayfield wind up doing backing vocals on one the Black Keys’ songs, “Things Ain’t Like They Used to Be,” but she recorded her debut full-length, With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, in Auerbach’s home studio. She toured over the next couple of years, opening for the likes of Lucero and the Avett Brothers, and her second LP, Tell Me, was released last month. See Jessica Lea Mayfield (above, playing “Our Hearts Are Wrong” on Late Show with David Letterman) at The Bowery Ballroom on Friday.
