The Hives Amp Up the Energy

The Hives – Terminal 5 – June 22, 2012

The Hives have hardly slowed down two decades into their career. And the Swedish band put on another in a long line of excellent shows—filled with high-energy performances and snarky, unabashed banter—on Friday at Terminal 5. While the members’ leg kicks and speaker jumps might not reach the same height they used to, there wasn’t any less fun occurring on either side of the railing. As the Hives moved swiftly through offerings from their numerous albums, Pelle Almqvist and his band never skipped a beat, filling every possible pause with crowd agitation or ear-blistering guitar licks.

The Hives sported top hats and coattails, another variation on their long-standing black-and-white stage attire, all while their drum and guitar techs flanked the stage (and performed backup vocals and played some tambourine and cowbell for good measure) dressed head to toe in ninja costumes. While the songs may not vary much, it really doesn’t matter in the moment because the songs are there to fuel the Almqvist-led party. And the festivities hit the highest highs during “Hate to Say I Told You So” and “Tick Tick Boom,” yet never dipped much below that level during the rest of the show. —Sean O’Kane
