A Double Dip of Other Lives

November 27th, 2012

They originally formed as the instrumental project Kunek eight years ago in Stillwater, Okla. But Jesse Tabish (vocals, piano, guitar), Jenny Hsu (cello, piano, vocals), Jonathon Mooney (piano, violin, guitar), Josh Onstott (bass, organ, vocals) and Colby Owens (drums) wanted something more, mainly vocals. So they switched the name to Other Lives and began making full-throated alternative-folk music, beginning with 2009’s self-titled album. A second LP, Tamer Animals, came out last year—Pitchfork says, “It feels organic and lovingly crafted, a record whose lushness often invites you to simply collapse into it.” And this year, Other Lives (above, doing “Tamer Animals” for KEXP FM) followed it with Mind the Gap EP (stream it below). But, of course, the even-better news is that you can see them tomorrow at The Bowery Ballroom and on Thursday at Music Hall of Williamsburg.
