More Than Just a Famous Last Name

Solange – The Bowery Ballroom – December 11, 2012

Everyone knows Solange Knowles, but not everyone has heard her latest EP, True, and the sexy, dark music she has made with Dev Hynes on production. Those who had listened to it packed The Bowery Ballroom last night with anticipation of hearing this new EP in real time. The singer has managed to carve out a unique niche for herself. Her last name recognized by all, Solange has become an indie darling of sorts, choosing interesting collaborations and releasing music that we might not expect.

Last night she took the stage ready to show the room just how much she has grown into her own sound, her style and herself. Dressed in a beautiful patterned shirt and suit with the most perfect of Afros, she opened with “Some Things Never Seem to Fucking Work.” Interspersing carefully planned but completely effortless dance moves into most of the tracks, she made the room feel like a dreamy high school dance.

Solange’s six-piece band was impressive and totally in sync with her silky smooth voice guiding the show. Hynes joined in on guitar, and the audience hung on every word. “I hope everyone is wearing their dancing shoes,” she said before launching into her latest single, “Losing You” to close out the show. Solange’s voice is truly the smoothest I’ve heard in a while, and it seems impossible not to fall for her. —Lauren Glucksman
