Cut Loose Tonight with Toro y Moi at Terminal 5

October 23rd, 2013

While in high school a decade ago, Chaz Bundick began recording music at home in Columbia, S.C. (“It started as bedroom project and it pretty much still is at the moment.”) But since graduating college in 2009, he’s been able to put those years of producing and making music to prolific use, releasing his first Toro y Moi album, Causers of This, in 2010, and its follow-up, Underneath the Pine, in 2011. Earlier this year, Toro y Moi (above, performing “High Living” live in studio for KEXP FM) released his third full-length, Anything in Return (stream it below). It’s a “bigger-sounding album, more accessible and poppy,” he says. And Pitchfork agrees: While they say the LP “isn’t dance music proper, nor does it aim to be,” it is filled with “silky R&B, roller-rink pop, bubblegum funk, tasteful chill-out music, all unified by a voice that’s grown more confident with time.” And that goes for his stage presence too, which you can see for yourself tonight at Terminal 5.
