Kopecky Family Band Headline The Bowery Ballroom on Thursday

October 14th, 2014

Like-minded musicians Kelsey Kopecky (vocals, keys and bass) and Gabe Simon (vocals, guitar and horns) met while attending school in Nashville, and within months, the two encountered Steven Holmes (guitar and lap steel), David Krohn (drums), Markus Midkiff (cello, guitar and keys) and Corey Oxendine (bass, guitar and horns), and formed the melodic folk-pop six-piece the Kopecky Family Band in 2007. Because each band member plays multiple instruments, the group has a broad chamber-rock sound. After releasing several EPs, the Kopecky Family Band (above, performing “The Glow” for WFUV FM) put out their debut LP, Kids Raising Kids (stream it below), in 2012—although it’s since been rereleased on ATO Records. And American Songwriter was impressed: “There’s great excitement in the way the band can go from zero to 60, then back to zero in seconds flat. As the album rollicks along, there remains a sonic unpredictability that’s rare for bands that count on vocal harmonies to carry much of the heavy load…. Even when a big group shows off their many toys, a quality album still often comes down to whether they can handle the basics better than others can. In that sense, the Kopecky Family Band is a unit tied together not by blood, but by their harmonic creations.” Catch them live on Thursday at The Bowery Ballroom. Another Nashville band, the quartet Coin, opens the show.
