A Double Dose of Alice Smith at The Bowery Ballroom

April 10th, 2015

Singer-songwriter Alice Smith grew up listening to a wide variety of music. So it should come as no surprise that her eclectic debut LP, For Lovers, Dreamers & Me (stream it below), out in 2006, featured rock, soul and R&B. PopMatters proclaimed it “so fresh and so worthwhile, it should make music lovers and dreamers very happy to have it blasting through their speakers.” Since then, Smith (above, doing “Fool for You”) has gotten married, had a daughter, left New York City for Los Angeles before settling in Brooklyn—and released a second full-length, She (stream it below), in 2013. The New York Times noted that “her songs stand outside current pop’s alliances with hip-hop and dance music; they hint at girl groups, 1970s soul, lightly orchestrated early-1960s pop and the go-go beat from Washington, without playing up to retro nostalgia.” And AllMusic notes, “She has enough skill and character to leave one hanging on her every note.” Smith has a big, wide-ranging voice that’s best experienced live. Sunday night at The Bowery Ballroom is already sold out, but you can still catch her there on Monday night.
