Spend the Weekend with the Suffers and Their Gulf Coast Soul

September 24th, 2015

Formed four years ago, and mixing the different cultures around their Gulf Coast home in Houston, the Suffers—Kam Franklin (vocals), Adam Castaneda (bass), Alex Zamora (guitar), Kevin Bernier (guitar), Cory Wilson (sax), Jon Durbin (trumpet), Michael Razo (trombone), Jose Luna (percussion), Patrick Kelly (keys) and Nick Zamora (drums)— define their sound as Gulf Coast soul. They’ve earned some recognition this year thanks to appearances at SXSW and on television. And now, the Suffers (above, doing “Gwan” on Late Show with David Letterman) are gaining more recognition one town at a time on the road. Their current tour brings them through New York City for a pair of shows this weekend: on Friday at Mercury Lounge, with St. Louis folkie Bhi Bhiman, and on Saturday at Rough Trade NYC, with Kahli Abdu & VHS Safari and Lili K.
