Ahead of New Album Eagulls Play Rough Trade NYC Tonight

May 9th, 2016

Childhood friends Mark Goldsworthy (guitar) and Henry Ruddell (drums) formed the English rock band Eagulls six years ago in Leeds before adding Liam Matthews (guitar), Tom Kelly (bass) and George Mitchell (vocals) to round out their swaggering post-punk sound. After releasing an EP (stream it below) and several singles, Eagulls (above, doing “Tough Luck” for WFUV FM, and, below, one of their new singles, “Lemontrees”) put out their eponymous debut full-length (stream it below) two years ago. According to AllMusic, the five-piece “reveal themselves to be a more intriguing, and more complicated, proposition than mere punk revivalists…. The album is an undeniably bracing beginning.” Their second LP, Ullages—which the Skinny calls “blissful and bloody-minded” and a “raincoat-clad gift from goth heaven”—comes out on Friday. And ahead of its arrival, Eagulls play Rough Trade NYC tonight. Local four-piece the Britanys open the show.
