Close Out the Weekend with Crocodiles at Mercury Lounge

After previous groups of theirs had broken up, childhood friends Brandon Welchez (vocals and guitar) and Charles Rowell (guitar) formed Crocodiles, a lo-fi, distortion-fueled noise-pop band based in San Diego, in 2008. The duo’s sound has been compared to Echo & the Bunnymen’s and that of a stripped-down version of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s. (Think sunny melodies and dirty feedback.) After putting out two albums, they decided to go with a bigger sound for the third, so the two added Robin Eisenberg (keys), Marco Gonzalez (bass) and Anna Schulte (drums). But Rowell and Welchez returned to their duo roots for their fourth full-length, the radio-ready Crimes of Passion (stream it below), out in 2013. AllMusic noted its “bubblegum snap of the production and the needle-sharp hooks of the songwriting. Crimes of Passion works on two levels then, both as an expression of the duo’s uneasy, uncompromising vision and as a catchy, easy-to-digest pop album.” Sticking with what works, Crocodiles (above, doing “Teardrop Guitar” in studio for KEXP FM) stuck to the two-man band for their latest release, the poppy Boys (stream it below), out last month. And again AllMusic rang in: “The entire album has the potential to reach new fans who like snappy, slightly scuffed-up pop songs, while still making those who need noise and dirt happy.” Wind down your weekend with Crocodiles at Mercury Lounge on Sunday night. Crocodiles Rock Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday

San Diego, in 2008. The duo’s sound has been compared to Echo & the Bunnymen’s and that of a stripped-down version of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s. (Think sunny melodies and dirty feedback.) After putting out two albums, they decided to go with a bigger sound for the third, so the two added Robin Eisenberg on keys, Marco Gonzalez on bass and Anna Schulte on drums. According to Rolling Stone, that album, last year’s Endless Flowers, “is filled with hook-y, fuzz-bombed cuts.” But Rowell and Welchez returned to their duo roots for their fourth full-length, Crimes of Passion (stream it below). “There’s an edge to these songs, a kind of darkness burning through the fuzzy, reverb-heavy pop,” said Consequence of Sound about the album, released in August. And now Crocodiles (above, doing “Sleep Forever” last year for Moshcam) head to Brooklyn in support of it to play Music Hall of Williamsburg on Saturday.

Crocodiles Play the Late Show Tomorrow Night

The duo’s sound has been compared to Echo & the Bunnymen’s and that of a stripped-down version of the Jesus and Mary Chain’s. (Think sunny melodies and dirty feedback.) Their newest album, Endless Flowers, comes out later this year, but they’re out on the road now. Despite recording as a two-piece, Crocodiles (above, doing “Mirrors” for KEXP FM) perform live as a four-piece, which you can see in person when they play the late show at Mercury Lounge tomorrow night.

CMJ Music Marathon Starts Today

It’s that time of year again: 20-minute sets; in midtown one minute, the Lower East Side the next; scarfing down food with minutes to spare before the next show. From Mercury Lounge to The Bowery Ballroom and beyond, the CMJ Music Marathon is upon us. Here’re which bands we’re specifically looking forward to seeing play live. New York City quintet Caveman transfers any pop sensibilities into a dreamy landscape of lush indie harmonies through love, nostalgia and other sentiments. In support of their debut, CoCo Beware, Caveman will play 10 shows during CMJ, including the Bowery Presents showcase on 10/22 at Pianos. —Tina Benitez

The CMJ Music Marathon, now in its 31st year, is back to make five days in October seem impossible to navigate. Expect packed lineups at each venue because every band you ever wanted to see is in town. The supergroup Wild Flag, featuring Mary Timony, from Helium, and Carrie Brownstein, of Sleater Kinney among others, kicks off things tonight at The Bowery Ballroom. And at the same time Afro-punk Presents Death to Hip-Hop, featuring technical death-metal pioneers Death and Brooklyn’s own skate-pizza punk, Cerebral Ballzy, whose name really says it all. Wednesday’s pick has to be the ever-controversial indie rap group Odd Future at Terminal 5. Then on Thursday try to get into the sold-out lineup at Mercury Lounge, with garage-rock Xray Eyeballs and Florida’s Jacuzzi Boys, followed by Memoryhouse’s atmospheric shoegaze and finally, J. Mascis. You will show up at 6:30 and stay the entire night. Friday has more fuzzed-out pop with Dum Dum Girls and Crocodiles at The Bowery Ballroom, and if you sleep over, on Saturday, Gang Gang Dance’s experimental electronic beats just might give you a chance to recover. And then sleep on Sunday for 24 hours before work. That’s your CMJ. —Jason Dean

Last year I spent the majority of CMJ camped out at Terminal 5 for My Morning Jacket. But this year I plan to get around. Not everyone has an abundance of free time, so if you can only hit one show, my money’s on the High Road Touring showcase at The Bowery Ballroom on 10/20. And despite it being a stellar lineup from top to bottom, for me the No. 1 band to check out during the whole festival is Alabama Shakes (above, playing “I Found You” for Live from the Shoals). The quartet, out of small-town Athens, Ala., has a four-song EP and an incredible bluesy-soul sound. You won’t want to miss Brittany Howard’s voice. Sure, she’s a postal worker by day, but she’s a bona fide rock star by night. Don’t miss this. You’ll be able to tell your friends you saw this band at the very beginning. —R. Zizmor

CMJ Music Marathon Starts Today

For some people, the CMJ Music Marathon, which starts today and runs through Saturday, is the most wonderful time of the year. There’s lots of live music to go around, so you know The Bowery Presents will be involved. Mercury Lounge—with the likes of Harper Blynn, John Vanderslice, Nada Surf, and Gordon Gano (formerly of Violent Femmes) and the Ryans—has a deep, disparate lineup throughout the festival.

But it’s not like The Bowery Ballroom is slacking this week, with seven bands filling the room on Thursday, including the Jezabels, a coed quartet from Sydney making their U.S. debut. Friday brings Dean Wareham, Crocodiles and Wakey! Wakey! to the venue, and Saturday is just crazy with Surfer Blood, Neon Indian, DOM and eight other cool groups. Plus there will even be a free afternoon party on Saturday at Piano’s, with six bands upstairs and five downstairs.

Of course, all of that is in Manhattan. In Brooklyn, Music Hall of Williamsburg will be doing plenty of entertaining of its own, with Kevin Devine and the Goddamn band headlining tonight, Head Automatica taking the lead tomorrow and the Pains of Being Pure at Heart as part of the Brooklyn Vegan showcase on Thursday. Blue Flowers, which began as a night of stellar music in West London and has blossomed into much more, hosts Friday’s showcase, bringing two of the hottest acts coming out of the UK right now, Chapel Club and Everything Everything—above, playing “Tin (Man Hole)” for Little Noise Sessions—to our shores.

So you’ve got an abundance of options. If you find that overwhelming and don’t know what to see, Mercury Lounge talent buyer Jay Belin offered some suggestions to NBC New York.

Passion Pit, Manners
Who said being young, dumb and full of cum couldn’t get you anywhere? Well, two of three anyway. The hype machine is in full gear and why not—this record rules hard. I heart these guys and that was before hearing this. Manners only makes it easier. (Passion Pit plays two sold-out shows at The Bowery Ballroom this weekend.)

Dawes, North Hills
My love of this record has confused more than one of my friends, but there is something undeniable about the sincerity and musical ability of these youngbloods from the great state of California. It may not land in my wheelhouse, but these days it’s all I want to hear.

Gentlemen Jesse and His Band, Gentlemen Jesse and His Band
Things can go two ways when you hear a band for the first time at a show. This one obviously fell into the positive end of the spectrum. It’s been said before, but they fill the void left in my soul by the Exploding Hearts tragedy.

Crocodiles, “Summer of Hate
Falling for a band after hearing one song is as dumb as selling the farm after the first date, but sometimes, if you’re lucky, it all works out in the end. The standout “I Wanna Kill” was built for skinny ties and confused Goths on dance floors across the country. (Crocodiles are playing Mercury Lounge tomorrow night.)

The Gaslight Anthem, The ’59 Sound
If you aren’t obsessed with this record, I’m de-friending you. Sorry for the drama, but seriously, rent a convertible, hit the highway and watch your troubles disappear in the rearview mirror. They’re the best thing to come out of Jersey since the Bouncing Souls (yeah, I went there).
