Elana James (vocals and fiddle) and Whit Smith (guitar and vocals) began the Western-swing revivalists Hot Club of Cowtown nearly 20 years ago in San Diego. Since then, the band has had a few different bassists—now locked in with Jake Erwin (upright bass and vocals)—and made the move to Austin, Texas. Earlier this year, Hot Club of Cowtown (above, performing “Stay a Little Longer”) self-released Midnight on the Trail (stream it below), “intended as a live-show album to add to the collections of our true believers, of which there are many. It’s a collection of some of our favorite Western-swing tunes and also some cowboy ballads—songs by Gene Autry, Cindy Walker, Johnny Mercer, as well as some traditional songs,” James told the Rochester City Newspaper. “We are doing a lot of those live on this tour, and also are continuing to play a wide array of our own songs and things from our hefty repertoire of the past almost two decades.” And speaking of that tour: Hot Club of Cowtown play The Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night.
