Common Kings Bring Brand-New Music to The Bowery Ballroom

February 14th, 2017

Inspired by R&B, soul and reggae—and their Polynesian roots—JR King (vocals), Taumata Grey (guitar), Ivan Kirimaua (bass) and Jerome Taito (drums) began jamming together a few years ago while attending Orange Coast College, which led to them later forming the pop-rock four-piece Common Kings in Orange County, Calif. After putting out several EPs and singles, their impressive debut full-length, the catchy, upbeat Lost in Paradise (stream it below), arrived earlier this month. And touring behind the new tunes, Common Kings (above, their official video for “Lost in Paradise”) play The Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night. Miami hip-hop group ¡Mayday! and big-wave surfer and reggae-pop singer-songwriter Makua Rothman open the show.

Come Dancing with Boys Noize and Hayden James This Week

October 12th, 2016

Summer’s finally over, which means people are now spending more time at work, which probably means a little extra stress. And one of the best ways to relieve stress is to dance it away—and to that end, Music Hall of Williamsburg’s got you covered this week: Boys Noize—whose latest release, Mayday (stream it below), Mixmag claims “will have any fan smiling uncontrollably from start to finish”—performs live on Wednesday night, with Remy Banks, Gila and Jubilee opening the show.

R&B-influenced electronic singer-songwriter and producer Hayden James (above, his “Something About You”) has temporarily left behind Australia to embark on his “Just a Lover” tour, getting people all across North America to the dance floor with “lush synthesizers, intricate melodies and sensual vocals,” per AllMusic. But you won’t have to travel so far to see him this week because James plays Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday night. And Dena Amy and Luke Million open the show.
