Hang 10 with Swami John Reis & the Blind Shake at Mercury Lounge

February 25th, 2015

San Diego post-punk singer-songwriter and guitarist James Reis is perhaps best known for fronting bands like Rocket from the Crypt and Hot Snakes, while Mike Blaha (vocals and baritone guitar), Jim Blaha (guitar and vocals) and Dave Roper (drums) stay in the mid-range in not using a bass but deftly mixing surf rock and garage punk into their own unique sound. And now all four musicians have teamed up as Swami John Reis & the Blind Shake (above, performing “Sets of Fire” live). They holed up at Pacific Beach in San Diego to record the recently released Modern Surf Classics (stream it below). According to Nerdist, “It’s reverb heavy and certainly surf infused, but make no mistake, this is a hard rockin’ endless summer. It’s punk rock: fast and furious.” And you can see them perform live tomorrow at Mercury Lounge. Brooklyn four-piece the So So Glos opens the show.

Cut Loose with Earthless Tomorrow at Mercury Lounge

August 21st, 2014

Although they’ve each also played in several other bands (including Rocket from the
and Howlin’ Rain), guitarist Isaiah Mitchell, bassist Mike Eginton and drummer Mario Rubalcaba have been making high-quality, jam-heavy instrumental psychedelic
rock together as Earthless since 2001. They’ve released one live album and three studio full-lengths, the most recent of which, From the Ages (stream it below), which also includes vocals, came out last year—and it was so good that even Pitchfork liked it: “This is the atavistic magic of three people locked in a room only with their instruments and each other, eyes closed, and mouths open…. The dudes are once again just riffing here. It’s a trip worth taking, at least a few times.” Earthless also recently released a live LP with Heavy Blanket (which includes J. Mascis), In a Dutch Blanket (stream it below), about which Noisey says, “Get ready to cry because you will never play this well.” They just kicked off a new tour last night, and you can see them play Mercury Lounge tomorrow night.

It Might Get Loud When OFF! Play The Bowery Ballroom Tomorrow

May 16th, 2014

The L.A. hardcore quartet OFF! is a supergroup of sorts, with each member doing work in other bands—vocalist Keith Morris in Black Flag and Circle Jerks, guitarist Dimitri Coats in Burning Brides, bassist Steven McDonald in Redd Kross and drummer Mario Rubalcaba in Rocket from the Crypt and Hot Snakes. They all joined together in 2009 and began playing live the following year. OFF! (above, their video for “Red White and Black”) recently released their second full-length album, the loud and fast Wasted Years (stream it below). And although their spring tour is winding now, you can see them play The Bowery Ballroom tomorrow night. Cerebral Ballzy and NASA Space Universe open the show.
